the Scripps National Spelling Bee

Now, I don't know how many of you have ever watched a Spelling Bee on prime time television, but if you haven't you are missing out! For the past three years I have watched the "Scripps National Spelling Bee." The first time I saw it, it was shown on TSN when there was supposed to be a Blue Jays game on. I was not impressed and even laughed at the idea of showing a spelling bee on tv, who in their right mind would watch that?! But then they started to spell... the sweat dripping of their forheads, asking for the orgins of words, the monotone voice of the officials, the look in their eyes, the invisible strokes that they make on their number cards struggling to spell a ridicously hard word. Before I knew it an hour had passed; I was hooked. I'm not going to lie the Scripps National Spelling Bee is intense. Last year I witnessed one boy faint on stage because he was under so much pressure and had to spell from a chair for the rest of the time. This year it was a battle until the end but in the end Katherine won with the word URSPRACHE and out very own Canadian, Finola Hackette, got second.
Believe it or not, I am not the only one who watches Spelling Bees. ABC reported that an average of 8 million viewers watched it unfold, and as many as 14 million tuned in for the final 11 minuets.
So if you missed it this year, be sure not to next year!

*interesting fact: there is no origin for the word Spelling Bee; it is one of those language puzzles that has never been satisfactorily accounted for.

its true, anyone who watches that until the end is a nerd. my mom wanted my to tape it cause she does spelling bees with the grade schools around here, so then i had to tape it and while i was setting it up, i was listening to it, but i couldn't stand it!! it was soo annoying. "can you repeat that? what is the orgin of that word? what is the meaning? what part of sentence is it?" so many questions! so then i turned it off :)

ok katrina, although i still believe you are one, it seems that my calling you a nerd has led to a public "lets-all-gang-up-and-make-fun-of-katrina" fest. so to liz and adrienne i say shame on you! (and whoever else was thinking it too!) and to katrina i say sorry, my bad. like liz says, being a nerd makes you cool!!...... i know, i dont get it either, but she believes it... anyways, you better be coming down with matt this weekend! see ya

I used to always want to be a part of a spelling bee when i was little, i never got to accomplish my dream, but boy can those kids spell, i'd never even seen or heard of half those words in my life.... I didn't watch the show tho, but the way you described it makes it sound like it'e the best show ever, lol... you should be a writer!
lol no joke,
and that spelling bee fact is quite interesting and sorta funny...
Well thanks for making me laugh yet again, kat... i miss you
take care

a whole weekend without you!! i don't think it's possible to have any fun without you. i miss you tons!! maybe if the guys actually kept us informed about these things and planned this stuff ahead of time it would have worked. we'll get together some time - the cool nerds have to stick together :)

ps. Josh when you use my "crazy little ideas" (i used quotes, cause its not crazy) its basically saying that you believe that...actions speak louder than words! i am so right, and i win!
